## GRE Practice - Data Interpretation - Set 4 1. The average starting annual salary of graduates in engineering was approximately what percent greater than that of graduates in the humanities?
1. 33%
2. 50%
3. 60%
4. 80%
5. 90%

Humanities is around 45 and Engineering is around 80
35 higher than 45 is 35/45 x 100 = 78

1. If 15% of the graduates in the sciences were majoring in evolutionary biology, then approximately how many 2016 graduates were evolutionary biology majors? (round your answer to the closest integer)

25% of 5192 students were in the sciences. That’s 1298 students.
15% of them majored in evolutionary biology. That’s 15/100 x 1298 = 194.7

1. What is the approximate average combined annual salary for students majoring in the sciences and in engineering?
1. \$73,000
2. \$67,000
3. \$82,000
4. \$61,000
5. \$46,000

Don’t waste time in massive calculations of finding the numbers of students in each field finding the weighted average, etc. It’s a simple calculation if you bear in mind the total number of students is the same (=5,192) so it can be ignored altogether.
Average = (23 x 80 + 25 x 65)/(23+25) = 72.18
NOTE: because 23 and 25 are so close even a simple average of 65 and 80 would have given 72.5

1. The angle at the centre of the sector representing engineering majors is how much larger than the angle at the centre of the sector representing humanities majors?
1. 270
2. 360
3. 400
4. 470
5. 540

Business Management is 31% and Humanities is 18%
Difference = 13%
13% of 3600 = 46.80

1. Which of the following can be inferred from the data above? Select all that apply.
1. The average starting annual salary for all graduates was above \$40,000.
2. The range of average starting salaries for all graduates was less than \$25,000.
3. The number of graduates majoring in business management exceeded the number of graduates majoring in engineering by more than 500

A: The lowest average salary is for Humanities majors at around 45,000. TRUE
B: The range is the difference between the lowest average salary and the highest average salary
85,000 – 45,000 = 40,000 FALSE
C: Don’t calculate. For the number of business majors to exceed the number of engineering majors by 500 the difference in the % must be close to 10%. But the difference is 31% – 25% = 6% only. FALSE
