GRE Practice - High Frequency GRE Word - List 3

Today’s GRE Practice is the first of many word lists that commonly appear on the GRE. These words may appear as answer options or even in the text of the questions. Knowing these words goes a long way in a solid prep for the GRE.

Each word below has four options for its meaning or synonym. Choose the correct option for each word

  1. FATUOUS
  1. silly
  2. boring
  3. volatile
  4. padded
FATUOUS means complacently and absurdly foolish. Other synonyms are DOLTISH, and GORMLESS.
  1. SINISTER
  1. familiar
  2. calm
  3. strong
  4. menacing
SINISTER means evil. Other synonyms are OMINOUS, and PORTENTOUS.
  1. ERSATZ
  1. trustworthy
  2. sham
  3. immediately
  4. probable
ERSATZ means an artificial and inferior substitute or imitation. Synonyms are BOGUS and FAUX
  1. PROBITY
  1. local
  2. acidic
  3. integrity
  4. hard earned
PROBITY is moral uprightness. Other synonyms are RECTITUDE and DECENCY.
  1. PRECOCIOUS
  1. inappropriate in behavior
  2. excessively self assured
  3. invisible to most
  4. early in development
PRECOCIOUS means exhibiting mature qualities at an unusually early age.
  1. ASSIDUOUS
  1. provocative
  2. industrious
  3. bulky
  4. harsh
ASSIDUOUS means showing great care, attention, and effort. Other synonyms are SEDULOUS and DILIGENT
  1. IMPUGN
  1. condemn
  2. coerce into submission
  3. ostracize
  4. encroach upon
To IMPUGN is to oppose or attack as false or lacking integrity.
  1. DUBIOUS
  1. doubtful
  2. mobile
  3. incompatible
  4. restricted
DUBIOUS is often used to signify something doubtful or suspicious. Other synonyms are DODGY and FISHY
  1. CHICANERY
  1. deliberate
  2. subterfuge
  3. penalty
  4. interruption
CHICANERY is deception. Other synonyms are WILE and ARTIFICE
  1. DEMUR
  1. shy
  2. ponder
  3. protest
  4. threaten
DEMUR means to take exception to or object to.
