GRE Practice - High Frequency GRE Word - List 4

Today’s GRE Practice is the first of many word lists that commonly appear on the GRE. These words may appear as answer options or even in the text of the questions. Knowing these words goes a long way in a solid prep for the GRE.

Each word below has four options for its meaning or synonym. Choose the correct option for each word

  1. DISSEMBLE
  1. break down
  2. contrast
  3. pretend
  4. distribute

DISSEMBLE means to hide under a false appearance. Other synonyms are BLUFF, FEIGN, FAKE.

  1. PENCHANT
  1. good fortune
  2. meditation
  3. connection
  4. inclination
To have a PENCHANT for something is to show a strong and continued inclination for it. Other synonyms are AFFINITY, PROCLIVITY and PROPENSITY.
  1. TURPITUDE
  1. integrity
  2. depravity
  3. resolute
  4. courage
TURPITUDE is vileness, and baseness.
  1. DELETERIOUS
  1. elimination
  2. axiomatic
  3. detrimental
  4. easily harnessed
DELETERIOUS means extremely harmful often unexpectedly. Other synonyms are NOXIOUS and BALEFUL.
  1. TRENCHANT
  1. disgusting
  2. mundane
  3. inclination
  4. keen
TRENCHANT means means having acute mental sharpness or perception.
  1. COGENT
  1. feminine
  2. compelling
  3. scintillating
  4. opulent
COGENT means convincing and pertinent. As in a “cogent argument.”
  1. PERNICIOUS
  1. injurious
  2. flexible
  3. grainy
  4. playful
PERNICIOUS also means harmful.
  1. EXACERBATE
  1. complicate
  2. regenerate
  3. educate
  4. chastise
To EXACERBATE is to worsen an already bad situation. Another synonym is AGGRAVATE
  1. MORBID
  1. celestial
  2. dismal
  3. punitive
  4. cordial
MORBID is relating to, or characteristic of disease and death. Other synonyms are GRISLY and GRUESOME
  1. QUOTIDIAN
  1. high-sounding
  2. legal guardian
  3. garden-variety
  4. minor ailment
QUOTIDIAN refers to mundane things and activities, particularly the obvious day-to-day tasks.
