GRE Practice - High Frequency GRE Word List - Set 2

Today’s GRE Practice is the first of many word lists that commonly appear on the GRE. These words may appear as answer options or even in the text of the questions. Knowing these words goes a long way in a solid prep for the GRE.

Each word below has four options for its meaning or synonym. Choose the correct option for each word

  1. PUNCTILIOUS
  1. hasty
  2. tardy
  3. formal
  4. knowledgeable

PUNCTILIOUS means marked by or concerned about precise accordance with the details of codes or conventions. Other synonyms are STIFF-NECKED, PROPER.

  1. MITIGATE
  1. argue
  2. mollify
  3. strengthen
  4. destroy

MITIGATE means to reduce the harshness or hostility. Other synonyms are ALLAY, SOOTHE and ASSUAGE. Don’t confuse with LITIGATE which means to legally contest something.

  1. RECONDITE
  1. familiar
  2. hermetic
  3. delicate
  4. protective

A RECONDITE thing is difficult or impossible to comprehend without specialized knowledge. Synonyms are ESOTERIC and ARCANE.

  1. GAINSAY
  1. profit
  2. foment
  3. negate
  4. emphasize

To GAINSAY is to contradict or oppose or declare something to be untrue. Other synonyms are REFUTE and REPUDIATE.

  1. SORDID
  1. verbose
  2. excess
  3. damp
  4. dirty
SORDID means marked by baseness or grossness. Especially something that is morally vile or filthy.
  1. DUPLICITY
  1. excess
  2. deceit
  3. thoughtful
  4. unnecessary
DUPLICITY is contradictory and dual thought, speech, or action. Other synonyms are ARTIFICE and GUILE
  1. CAUSTIC
  1. defamation
  2. catastrophe
  3. part of a group
  4. payment
CAUSTIC means corrosive but is more often used to refer to speech marked by incisive sarcasm. Other synonyms are ACERBIC and SARDONIC.
  1. ENCOMIUM
  1. accolade
  2. valediction
  3. appendix
  4. entrance
An ENCOMIUM is glowing and warmly enthusiastic praise. Other synonyms are PANEGYRIC and HOMAGE.
  1. MINATORY
  1. diminutive
  2. threatening
  3. poignant
  4. extractable
MINATORY means having a menacing quality. Other synonyms are BALEFUL and SINISTER
  1. AMELIORATE
  1. break down
  2. deceive
  3. improve
  4. harden
To AMELIORATE is to make better or more tolerable.
